Tip for Newcomers

As a newcomer to Germany, you can still apply for loans! Many banks offer credit to expats with valid residence permits and regular income. Start with smaller loan amounts to build your credit history (Schufa score).

  • You need a German bank account (Girokonto)
  • Valid residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) required
  • Proof of regular income (Gehaltsnachweise)
Financial Terms Explained

Understanding German Loan Terms

Schufa

Germany's credit scoring system. Banks check your Schufa score before approving loans. Newcomers start with a neutral score.

Kredit / Darlehen

German words for "loan" or "credit". Ratenkredit means installment loan with fixed monthly payments.

Zinsen (Interest)

The cost of borrowing money. "Effektiver Jahreszins" (APR) includes all fees - always compare this rate!

Laufzeit (Term)

The duration of your loan in months. Longer terms mean lower monthly payments but more total interest.

Sondertilgung

Extra repayment option. Allows you to pay off your loan early without penalty (at good banks).

Bonitat (Creditworthiness)

Your financial reliability. Based on income, existing debts, and payment history.

Understanding Schufa - Essential for Newcomers

Schufa (Schutzgemeinschaft fur allgemeine Kreditsicherung) is Germany's main credit bureau. Almost all banks check your Schufa score before approving loans.

Good News for Newcomers

  • No Schufa history is NOT negative
  • You start with a neutral score
  • Some banks specialize in expat loans
  • Income proof can compensate for no history

How to Build Schufa Score

  • Open a German bank account
  • Get a postpaid mobile contract
  • Apply for a credit card (small limit)
  • Pay all bills on time - always!

Important: Our loan comparison is "Schufa-neutral" - checking rates here does NOT affect your score. Only a formal loan application creates a Schufa entry.

Types of Loans Available

Depending on your needs, there are different loan types with varying conditions.

Personal Loan

The classic loan for any purpose. Fixed monthly payments, predictable term, no restrictions on use.

  • Flexible use
  • Fixed payments

Car Loan

Purpose-bound loan for vehicles. Often lower interest rates as the vehicle serves as collateral.

  • Lower rates
  • Vehicle as security

Debt Consolidation

Combine existing loans and benefit from better conditions. One payment instead of many.

  • Combine loans
  • Save on interest

Calculation Example

How loan costs are calculated

Initial Situation

You want to borrow €10,000 for 48 months. Here's how to calculate the total cost:

Calculation

Loan AmountPrincipal (Nettodarlehensbetrag)
€10,000
Interest Rate (APR)Effektiver Jahreszins - always use this!
5.99%
Monthly Payment€10,000 ÷ 48 + interest portion
€235
Total Payments€235 × 48 months
€11,280
Total Interest Cost€11,280 - €10,000
€1,280

Result

Total Cost of Loan
€1,280

At 7.99% APR, the same loan would cost €1,728 in interest - €448 more!

Interest rates depend on your creditworthiness (Bonität). The rate shown is representative. Your actual rate may differ based on your Schufa score and income.

Risk Analysis

What to watch out for when taking a loan

Always compare Effektivzins (APR)

The Sollzins (nominal rate) doesn't include all fees. Always look at the Effektiver Jahreszins (APR) which shows the true total cost of the loan including all charges.

Be careful with Restschuldversicherung

Payment protection insurance (Restschuldversicherung) is often expensive and may not be necessary. Banks sometimes include it automatically - check your offer carefully.

Look for Sondertilgung option

Extra repayment options (Sondertilgung) allow you to pay off your loan faster without penalty. This can save you significant interest costs over the loan term.

Longer terms mean more interest

While longer loan terms reduce monthly payments, you'll pay more total interest. A 60-month loan costs significantly more than a 36-month loan for the same amount.

Newcomer FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can foreigners/expats get loans in Germany?
Yes! Foreigners with valid residence permits can apply for loans in Germany. You need: a German bank account, registered address (Anmeldung), proof of income, and valid ID. EU citizens have easier access, while non-EU citizens may need to show their residence permit is valid for the loan duration.
I have no Schufa history - can I still get a loan?
Yes! Having no Schufa history is different from having a bad score. As a newcomer, you start with a neutral score. Some banks specialize in expat customers. Strong income documentation and stable employment can help compensate for lack of credit history.
Is the loan comparison really free?
Yes, the comparison is completely free and non-binding. We are funded by bank commissions, so there are no costs to you.
What documents do I need as a foreigner?
As a foreigner, you typically need: valid passport and residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel), Anmeldung (registration certificate), last 3 months of payslips (Gehaltsnachweis), employment contract (Arbeitsvertrag), and German bank statements. Self-employed applicants need tax returns.
How long must I live in Germany before applying?
Requirements vary by bank. Some accept applications from recent arrivals with stable employment, while others prefer 6-12 months of residence. Having completed your probationary period (Probezeit) at work significantly improves your chances.
Does checking rates affect my Schufa score?
No! Our comparison uses "Konditionsanfrage" (rate inquiry), which is Schufa-neutral and does NOT affect your score. Only when you formally submit a loan application does the bank make a "Kreditanfrage" that appears on your Schufa.
How quickly is the loan paid out?
With complete documents, payout often happens within 24-48 hours for "Sofortkredit" (instant loans). Standard processing takes 3-5 business days. Digital banks with VideoIdent are fastest.
