Loans and Credit in Germany
Finding a good loan in Germany isn't complicated once you know where to look. Interest rates vary a lot between banks, and even a small difference in the APR can add up to hundreds of EUR over the life of a loan.
If you're new to Germany, you probably don't have a Schufa score yet. Schufa is Germany's credit reporting system, and most banks check it before approving a loan. But some lenders work with applicants who have no credit history here. Our comparison shows you which banks are open to newcomers.
Whether you need a personal loan, a car loan, or a mortgage, start by comparing rates. It's free and takes 2 minutes.
Car Insurance
You can't register a car in Germany without liability insurance. That's the law (§1 PflVG). But prices differ wildly between providers. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive offer is often 500 EUR or more per year.
To get quotes, you enter your car details, your address, and a few things about your driving history. In about 2 minutes, you'll see offers for liability, partial coverage (Teilkasko), and full coverage (Vollkasko). If you decide to switch, the new insurer usually handles the paperwork for you.
New to Germany? You'll likely start with no claims class SF 0 or SF 1/2, which means higher premiums at first. Comparing is the fastest way to find a reasonable price.
Credit Cards
A credit card isn't strictly necessary in Germany (debit cards work almost everywhere), but it helps for online shopping, travel bookings, and building a payment history. Several banks offer cards with no annual fee, Apple Pay support, and even cashback.
Insurance for Your Life in Germany
Germany has both mandatory and optional insurance. The most common types:
- Health insurance: Required by law. You're either in the public system (GKV) or the private system (PKV). Which one applies depends on your income and visa type.
- Liability insurance (Haftpflicht): Covers damage you cause to others. Costs 50-100 EUR a year and is considered the single most important insurance in Germany.
- Legal protection (Rechtsschutz): Covers legal costs if you have a dispute with your landlord, employer, or an authority. Especially useful when you're still learning how things work.
- Household contents (Hausrat): Protects your belongings against theft, fire, and water damage.
Electricity, Gas, and Internet
When you move into an apartment in Germany, you're automatically on the local default energy tariff (Grundversorgung). It works, but it's usually more expensive than it needs to be. Switching providers can save you 200 to 500 EUR a year on electricity and gas combined.
The same goes for internet (DSL) and mobile plans. Prices vary by region, speed, and contract length. Comparing takes a couple of minutes.
