Key takeaways

  • You can handle private health insurance with help in your own language: independent Turkish-speaking advisors exist, and many portals and insurers offer multilingual support. Availability varies, so ask each provider which languages they cover.
  • There is no single starting price. The cheapest tariffs for young, healthy applicants can begin from roughly 140 euros per month; the average PKV premium is around 617 euros per month in 2026.
  • Employees can switch from public (GKV) to private (PKV) once their salary stays above the 2026 income limit of 77,400 euros per year. The employer pays 50 percent of the premium.
  • Turkish-speaking doctors can be found through the official KBV search (arztsuche.116117.de), which lists the languages each practice speaks. With PKV you can freely choose any licensed doctor.

Getting help in a language you understand

German health-insurance contracts are written in German, and that is exactly where many newcomers get stuck. Here is how you can still make a confident choice without perfect German.

What it costs and who can switch

Real costs in 2026

There is no universal starting price. For a young, healthy applicant the cheapest comprehensive tariffs can begin from around 140 euros per month, while the average PKV premium across all policyholders is roughly 617 euros per month. Your own premium depends on your age, health, profession and chosen coverage.

As an employee you receive a 50 percent employer contribution toward your premium, which lowers what you actually pay each month.

Who can switch to PKV

Employees can move from statutory (GKV) to private (PKV) once their regular gross salary is expected to stay above the annual income limit (Versicherungspflichtgrenze), which is 77,400 euros for 2026. Self-employed people and civil servants can usually choose PKV regardless of income.

PKV is a long-term decision, so reading the terms carefully, ideally with advice in your own language, is worth the time before you sign.

Sources and methodology

How we research: our editorial team checks every figure against official and independent German sources and refreshes the page when the rules change. We do not name a specific insurer as offering a Turkish service unless that service is publicly documented.

  • Income limit (Versicherungspflichtgrenze / JAEG) 2026 of 77,400 euros: confirmed via AOK, Techniker Krankenkasse and Allianz.
  • PKV cost ranges (cheapest tariffs from around 140 euros, average around 617 euros per month in 2026): Check24, Verivox and the PKV association (pkv.de).
  • Finding Turkish-speaking doctors: the official KBV doctor search at arztsuche.116117.de (shows practice languages) and the directory tuerkischeaerzte.de.
  • Your right to a premium review and special cancellation after a premium increase: Sections 40 and 41 of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG).
