Vacation Without Credit Card: Is It Possible?
Short answer: yes, easily. German travel portals and airlines almost all offer direct debit, PayPal or instant bank transfer. The reason is simple: credit cards are far less common in Germany than in the US or the UK. According to the Deutsche Bundesbank, only about one in six card payments in 2024 was made with a credit card. The clear standard here is the debit card (Girocard) and direct debit.
Where it still gets tricky: rental cars usually need a real credit card as a deposit on site, and very last-minute bookings (under 5 days before departure) often rule out direct debit. But let us go through it step by step.
Why do some providers ask for a credit card?
A credit card gives the provider security: if you do not pay or cause damage, they can charge the amount through the card company. That is why hotels sometimes ask for a credit card at check-in and rental companies almost always do.
For pure online bookings (flights, package holidays, hotels) this is not an issue. You pay in advance, so the provider already has the money before you travel.
Payment Methods Overview
Direct debit / SEPA (Lastschrift)
The amount is debited directly from your current account. This is the standard method with German operators and airlines. You need a German (or EU) bank account and usually 5 to 14 days lead time before departure.
PayPal
Linked to your bank account, but with extra buyer protection. Accepted by Lufthansa, Eurowings, Condor, Booking.com and many travel portals. Works at short notice too.
Debit card (Visa/Mastercard)
Many current accounts now come with a Visa or Mastercard debit card. Online it works almost everywhere like a credit card, but the amount is deducted immediately. Providers such as N26, Revolut or Trade Republic offer free debit cards.
Klarna / installments
Pay later or split the amount into installments. Eurowings offers Klarna directly, and on other portals Klarna is increasingly available. Note: a credit check (Bonitaetspruefung) is carried out.
Instant bank transfer (Sofortueberweisung)
You transfer directly through your online banking and the provider gets an instant confirmation. Works with Lufthansa and some travel portals.

| Eurowings | ✓ (free!) | ✓ | ✓ | 5 days |
| Condor | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ | varies |

Where can I book without a credit card?
Package holidays and tour operators
TUI, DERTOUR, Alltours, Check24 and Ab-in-den-Urlaub accept direct debit, bank transfer or PayPal. With TUI, payment is usually in two parts: a deposit at booking and the balance four weeks before departure. TUI does not offer true installments, though.

Hotels without a credit card
On Booking.com there is a "Book without credit card" filter that shows hotels which do not require a card at booking. Other options: "Pay at the property" (cash or EC card at the hotel) or PayPal.
HRS and Expedia also offer alternative payment methods at many hotels.
Rental cars: here it gets difficult
Online booking often works via PayPal or direct debit. But on site, Sixt, Europcar and Hertz almost always require a real credit card as a deposit. Prepaid cards and debit cards are usually not accepted.
If you do not have a credit card and need a rental car, it is worth looking into a credit card for foreigners in Germany.
Debit card: the best alternative to a credit card
If you do not like direct debit or want more flexibility, a debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo is the easiest solution. It works online everywhere credit cards are accepted. The difference: the amount is deducted from your account immediately, not at the end of the month.
Free debit cards are available from:
- N26, Revolut, Trade Republic (completely free, with Apple Pay and Google Pay)
- Sparkassen and Volksbanken (often as "girocard with Debit Mastercard")
- DKB, ING, Comdirect (free current accounts with debit card)

Pay for your vacation in installments
If you are planning a bigger trip, you can spread the cost over several months. Here are the options:
Klarna at Eurowings and many portals
Installments up to 24 months. A credit check is required.
A small loan through your own bank
A small consumer loan can be cheaper than installments offered by the travel provider.
Important: installment payments may incur interest depending on the term. Always compare the effective annual interest rate (effektiver Jahreszins) first. And remember: TUI's deposit plus balance is not an installment plan, it is a normal split payment.
5 tips for booking safely without a credit card
Prefer German operators
German travel portals offer the most alternative payment methods. They are also governed by German travel law with a mandatory insolvency certificate.
Link PayPal to your current account
That way you pay without a credit card and still get PayPal buyer protection. If something goes wrong, you can open a case with PayPal.
Check insolvency protection
For package holidays the insolvency certificate (Sicherungsschein) is mandatory. The German Travel Insurance Fund (DRSF) protects your money if the operator becomes insolvent.
Book early for the direct debit option
Direct debit only works with lead time (5 to 14 days depending on the provider). For last-minute bookings, switch to PayPal or instant bank transfer.
Get a debit card for more flexibility
A free debit card from N26 or Revolut works online like a credit card, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.

- PayPal is the most flexible option (with buyer protection)
- A free debit card (N26, Revolut) replaces the credit card online

Sources and Method
How we research: we checked the payment options against the providers' official help pages, and the statements on card usage and consumer rights against established, independent sources. Lead times and conditions can change depending on the provider, so it is best to verify them directly before booking. As of June 2026.
