Key Takeaways

  • Third-party liability (Kfz-Haftpflicht) is mandatory. No insurance, no registration.
  • Direct insurers like HUK24, CosmosDirekt and Allianz Direct are often the cheapest in 2026 (AutoBild tested 75 providers, 11/2025).
  • Without a German no-claims history newcomers often pay 50 to 100 percent more. A certificate from your home insurer reduces that.
  • Get the eVB number before going to the registration office. Nothing happens without it.
  • Annual switch deadline: 30 November. If your premium goes up you can cancel mid-year (per ADAC).

What does cheap car insurance really cost in Germany in 2026?

The honest answer: it depends on your profile. Someone who just moved to Germany and insures a small car pays differently than a family with two cars and a 20-year no-claims history.

Real reference points from current market data:

  • Verivox shows a range from 382 to 1,235 EUR/year for a VW UP as a second car in Hamburg, postcode 22145 (Verivox, 04.05.2026).
  • Finanztip documents 250 to 500 EUR for partial cover in Göttingen and 536 to 677 EUR for an EV in Munich (Finanztip, 05.05.2026).
  • AutoBild calculated savings up to 1,296 EUR/year for high-mileage drivers switching from a mid-range to the cheapest tariff (AutoBild, 11/2025).

Premiums in Germany rose on average about eight percent between October 2025 and January 2026 (GDV figures). Repair costs, parts inflation and higher claim frequency are the drivers. Comparing pays off in 2026 more than in earlier years.

For newcomers

No-claims class as a newcomer: why you pay more at the start

In Germany the premium works like a staircase. Each year you drive without an accident, you climb a step and pay less. The lowest step is SF 0, the highest in practice is SF 35+. Drivers at the top sometimes pay only 20 percent of the base premium.

As a newcomer you usually start at SF 1/2 or lower. Not fair, but reality. Three ways around it:

  1. 1. Bring a certificate from your home country

Many insurers accept a no-claims certificate (Schadenfreiheitsbescheinigung) from EU countries, Switzerland and other states. Ask your former insurer for a written confirmation in English or German.

  2. 2. Take over a family member's SF class

Spouses or first-degree relatives in Germany can sometimes transfer their SF class to you. Conditions vary by insurer.

  3. 3. Use the second-car tariff

If your partner already insures a car in Germany, your car as a second vehicle is often cheaper.

Not every insurer handles this the same way. HUK24, Allianz Direct and CosmosDirekt are typically more flexible with foreign SF certificates. A quick comparison surfaces which provider works for your country.

Vehicle class and regional class 2026: what your car and your postcode cost you

The premium depends not only on you and your record, but also on the car and where you live.

Vehicle class (Typklasse)

Risk rating of your make + model + engine, recalculated yearly by GDV (German Insurance Association). For 2026 many SUVs went up, while small cars like VW Up, Opel Corsa and Seat Ibiza became cheaper. Liability scale: 10 (cheap) to 34 (expensive).

Regional class (Regionalklasse)

Rating of your postcode, based on claims data in your district. Munich, Berlin and Offenbach cost more than rural Bavaria or Mecklenburg. Adjusted yearly by GDV.

Tip: Before buying a car, check its Typklasse online. An Astra can be 200 to 300 EUR cheaper per year than a BMW of similar size.

Direct insurer or comparison portal: which is really cheaper in 2026?

The most common newcomer question: should I go directly to HUK24 or use a comparison portal?

Finanztip's honest answer: cheapest is the combination. First run a comparison through a portal like Tarifcheck or CHECK24 to set a price range. Then check HUK24 separately. HUK24 is not listed by many portals and is often 5 to 10 percent cheaper than the comparison winner (Finanztip, 05.05.2026,"doppelt vergleichen" strategy).

On meinetarife24.de you find the full car insurance comparison powered by the Tarifcheck network with 300+ providers.

What not to do: Take the first offer without comparing. AutoBild reports gaps of 33 to 52 percent between the cheapest and mid-range providers. Ten minutes of comparison is well spent.

Practical flow

The eVB number: the step nobody explains

The eVB number is an electronic insurance confirmation. Seven characters, alphanumeric, valid until registration. Without it the registration office will not register your car. Full stop.

How to get it:

  1. Choose an insurer and submit the application (online takes a few minutes).
  2. The insurer sends the eVB usually by email instantly, sometimes by SMS, rarely by post.
  3. Bring the eVB, vehicle title (Fahrzeugbrief), registration document, ID or passport plus residence permit to the registration office.
  4. The insurance contract starts automatically with registration, not before.

Moving from the Netherlands, France or another EU country with a registered car? You have a legal deadline to re-register it in Germany. The eVB is the first step. Apply for it a few days before your registration appointment, in case anything needs clarification.

Switching dates

When can you switch? Annual deadline and special cancellation right

The standard switching deadline is 30 November. Your cancellation must reach the old insurer by that date, then the new contract starts on 1 January.

If your insurer raises the premium, even slightly, you have a special cancellation right (Sonderkündigungsrecht) under the German Insurance Contract Act and confirmed by ADAC guidance. You can cancel within one month of receiving the notice, regardless of 30 November.

A trick existing customers miss: Some insurers do not pass on the full no-claims discount even when you had an accident-free year. Legally this counts as a hidden premium increase and triggers the special cancellation right. Check your annual statement for both the total and the SF class.

Saving tips every newcomer should know

Pay annually, not monthly

Monthly installments often cost 5 to 8 percent extra. Pay yearly if you can.

Choose a sensible deductible

150 EUR for partial and 300 EUR for full cover lowers the premium clearly. Going higher rarely makes sense.

Limit the driver circle

If only you drive, declare it that way. Adding extra drivers raises the premium.

Be honest about mileage

If you commute little, say so. False mileage costs you cover when you make a claim.

Accept workshop binding

Using an insurer-approved repair shop saves 10 to 15 percent. Avoid this only if your car still has a manufacturer warranty.

Skip the unnecessary add-ons

Rabattschutz (no-claims protection) costs 50 to 100 EUR extra and rarely pays off. Finanztip generally advises against it.

When is partial cover enough, when do you need full cover?

Mandatory: liability insurance. It covers damage you cause to others. Anything that happens to your own car is not covered.

Partial cover (Teilkasko)

Covers theft, glass damage, animal collision, marten damage, storm and hail. Recommended for cars up to 5 to 7 years old. For a 15-year-old car with 2,000 EUR residual value it rarely pays off anymore.

Full cover (Vollkasko)

Adds self-inflicted damage and vandalism. Recommended for new cars and more expensive used cars (over 10,000 EUR residual value). Leasing and financing contracts often require full cover.

Finanztip rule of thumb: Full cover stops making sense when the car's residual value drops below 5,000 EUR or it gets older than 8 years. Switch to partial, later possibly liability only.

Watch out

Common mistakes that cost money

  • Comparing price only, not coverage. A 220 EUR tariff with full cover at 1,500 EUR deductible is not cheap, only superficially.
  • Skipping the yearly review. Insurers change prices quietly. The cheap provider from 2024 may be expensive by 2026.
  • Confusing the eVB with the policy. The eVB is just the confirmation, the policy document arrives later by post.
  • Wrong annual mileage. Declaring 10,000 km when you drive 25,000 km risks your cover when a claim happens.
  • Forgetting to transfer your SF class. The new insurer takes it over only if you ask. Otherwise you restart at SF 0.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need German car insurance as a foreigner?

Yes. Once you register a car in Germany, third-party liability is legally required under the Mandatory Insurance Act. Your home-country policy is generally not accepted once the vehicle is registered locally.

Can I transfer my foreign no-claims history to a German insurer?

From EU countries, Switzerland, Norway and some other states this is usually possible if your former insurer issues a written certificate. HUK24, Allianz Direct and CosmosDirekt are typically more flexible with foreign certificates.

How fast do I get the eVB number?

Most direct insurers send the eVB by email within minutes after you finish the online application. Some take up to 24 hours. Apply the day before your registration appointment if you need to be sure.

When is car insurance cheapest in Germany?

During the main switching season in November. Many insurers offer better conditions to attract new customers. If your insurer raises your premium mid-year, you also have a special cancellation right (per ADAC guidance).

Is full comprehensive cover worth it for a used car?

Rule of thumb: yes up to about 8 years of age or 5,000 EUR residual value. After that, partial cover or liability-only is usually enough. Leasing contracts often require full cover regardless of age.

Can I sign the contract in English or Turkish?

Most large German insurers contract only in German. On meinetarife24.de you can compare in English, German and Turkish, but the final contract document is German. Have a friend or translator review it before signing.

Which direct insurers accept foreign no-claims certificates?

As of 2026 mainly HUK24, CosmosDirekt, Allianz Direct and DA Direkt. Call their customer service first to confirm the documents required for your specific country.

What happens if I do not pay my premium?

After two reminders the insurer cancels cover and notifies the registration office. The car gets deregistered. While in arrears you have no cover in case of an accident and must pay damages personally.
