Car Insurance in Germany(Autoversicherung / KFZ-Versicherung Guide)
Planning to drive in Germany? This guide explains how car insurance (KFZ-Versicherung) works, what types you need, and how to find the best rates.
What is KFZ-Versicherung?
Was ist das? / Bu nedir?
KFZ-Versicherung (motor vehicle insurance) is mandatory in Germany. You cannot register a car without it. There are three types:
Haftpflicht
Liability - REQUIRED
Covers damage you cause to others
Teilkasko
Partial coverage - Optional
+ theft, fire, glass, weather damage
Vollkasko
Full coverage - Optional
+ your own fault accidents, vandalism
Key German Terms for Car Insurance
- KFZ-Versicherung = Motor vehicle insurance
- Haftpflichtversicherung = Liability insurance (mandatory)
- Teilkasko = Partial coverage insurance
- Vollkasko = Full coverage insurance
- SF-Klasse = No-claims bonus class (Schadenfreiheitsklasse)

Important for Newcomers
You need car insurance BEFORE registering your car. The insurance company will give you an eVB-Nummer (electronic confirmation number) that you bring to the Zulassungsstelle.
If you have driving history from another EU country, some insurers may recognize your no-claims bonus. Ask about "Schadenfreiheitsrabatt aus dem Ausland".

Common QuestionsHäufige Fragen / Sık Sorulan Sorular
Can I use my foreign driving history?
Sometimes. Many German insurers recognize no-claims history from EU/EEA countries. Some also accept history from non-EU countries with official documentation. Ask for "Anrechnung ausländischer Schadenfreiheitsklassen" when applying.
What is the SF-Klasse (no-claims class)?
The Schadenfreiheitsklasse (SF) reflects your accident-free years. New drivers start at SF0 or SF½. Each claim-free year moves you up (SF1, SF2, etc.), reducing your premium. An accident moves you down several classes.
When is the best time to switch insurance?
Most car insurance contracts in Germany end on December 31. To switch, you must cancel by November 30. You can also switch after a premium increase or after an accident claim.
What does "Selbstbeteiligung" mean?
Selbstbeteiligung is the deductible - the amount you pay yourself before insurance kicks in. Common amounts are €150-500 for Teilkasko and €300-1000 for Vollkasko. Higher deductible = lower monthly premium.
Do I need German car insurance for a foreign car?
If your car is registered abroad, your foreign insurance covers you in Germany (with Green Card for non-EU). But if you're a German resident for more than 6-12 months, you must register and insure the car in Germany.
