Key German Terms (you will see these in contracts)

Unfallversicherung = Accident Insurance
Invaliditätssumme = Disability Coverage Sum
Progression = Progressive Payout (225–500%)
Gliedertaxe = Body Part Value Scale (VVG §178)

Key Takeaways

  • · Plans start at €5/month for €100,000 disability coverage; €250,000 coverage runs €12–€18/month.
  • · Stiftung Warentest issue 03/2026 tested 120 plans, 8 rated "very good" (including budget plans).
  • · Three things that matter: disability sum, progression (225–500%), Gliedertaxe per VVG §178.
  • · Statutory cover (DGUV) only pays for work or commute accidents — not for free time or sports.
  • · Open to expats too: no SCHUFA needed, a German bank account and Anmeldung are enough.

What is private accident insurance in Germany?

Private accident insurance (German: Unfallversicherung) pays a lump sum if you are left with permanent physical impairment after an accident. The legal framework sits in VVG §178. Unlike the statutory system, the private cover works 24/7 — on holiday, playing sports, falling off your bike, anywhere in the world.

The statutory accident insurance (Berufsgenossenschaften, DGUV) only covers work accidents, commute accidents and occupational diseases. Slip while jogging? You are on your own. Get injured cooking at home? Same thing. That gap is what private cover fills.

How much does cheap accident insurance cost in Germany 2026?

Three things drive the price: disability sum, progression rate and your profession. An office worker insuring €100,000 pays much less than a roofer insuring €500,000. Here are the typical price bands we saw across Tarifcheck, Verivox and direct insurers like HUK in early 2026:

Disability SumMonthly PremiumWhen it makes sense
€100,000€5 – €9Basic protection — common for students and young professionals
€250,000€12 – €18Recommended by Verbraucherzentrale for salaried employees
€500,000€25 – €35Sensible for families with a single main earner

Sources: Tarifcheck live comparison 04/2026, Verivox price list (from €3.39/month), HUK24 sample mid-tier plan (~€11.51/month). Actual premiums vary by entry age and profession.

What lowers your price

  • · Excess (Selbstbeteiligung) on minor claims
  • · Annual payment instead of monthly (often 3–5% discount)
  • · Office-worker tariff, if your profession qualifies

What to watch out for

  • · Progression of at least 225%, ideally 500%
  • · Rescue costs (Bergungskosten) included — matters on holiday
  • · Worldwide cover with no time limit

Stiftung Warentest issue 03/2026 — what was tested?

On 18 February 2026, Stiftung Warentest published a major test of private accident insurance in issue 03/2026. 120 plans were compared. Eight earned the top rating "sehr gut" (very good). The test looked at disability benefit, Gliedertaxe, progression, rescue costs and how consumer-friendly the contract terms were.

One detail worth noting: cheap plans can be "very good" too. The price is less important than the contract structure. Plans with €100,000 basic coverage and 350% progression are already available from around €6/month — and pay out €350,000 in case of full disability.

The full test report is on test.de (Stiftung Warentest). For a second opinion in German, the Finanztip guide to Unfallversicherung is a great companion read.

What benefits do you actually need?

Insurers love adding extras. Three things matter: disability benefit, progression and the Gliedertaxe. Everything else is nice to have.

1. Disability sum (Invaliditätsleistung)

The basic amount paid out for 100% disability. Verbraucherzentrale advice: three to five times your gross annual income. Earning €50,000 means insuring €150,000 to €250,000.

2. Progression (225–500%)

Severe disability triggers a multiplier on the payout. With 350% progression, €100,000 basic coverage turns into €350,000 in the worst case. The surcharge is usually €1 to €3 per month. Almost always worth it.

3. Gliedertaxe (VVG §178)

A table assigning a percentage value to each body part. A thumb is worth around 20%, a leg 70%. Better plans use improved Gliedertaxen — important if your work relies on fine motor skills (musicians, surgeons, craftspeople).

Who really needs private accident insurance?

Not everyone needs it. If you already have occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU), your main income risk is covered. Private accident insurance is most valuable for:

  • Self-employed and freelancers — no statutory cover, no sick pay. A free-time accident can become existential quickly.
  • Parents with young children — kids fall often, and statutory cover only applies in kindergarten and school. Family plans start around €10/month.
  • Seniors (60+) — higher fall risk, shorter waiting periods than for health add-ons. Rescue cost coverage is particularly important here.
  • Active sports people — skiing, climbing, cycling. An extended accident definition pays off.

Tip for newcomers and expats in Germany

Just arrived in Germany and worried about accident cover? Good news: no SCHUFA score is needed, no long-term residency, no perfect German. You need a German bank account, a registered address (Anmeldung at the Bürgeramt) and that is basically it. Many insurers communicate in English if your German is not there yet.
