Cheap Cars to Insure in Germany 2026: Type-Class List
A sourced list of car models that sit in Haftpflicht type-class 10 to 18 for 2026. Includes a section written for expats and newcomers.
Quick answer: Cars that are cheap to insure in Germany sit in liability type-class (Haftpflicht-Typklasse) 10 to 15. The 2026 GDV figures show models like the Smart Fortwo Coupé 1.0 (HP 13), Fiat 500 1.2 (HP 13), Mercedes SLK 200 Roadster (HP 12), and the Hyundai i10 1.1 with a fully-comprehensive class as low as 10. The full list with sources is below.
Key Takeaways
- Lower Typklasse = lower premium. 2026 bands: HP 10–25, partial cover 10–33, fully comprehensive 10–34. Source: GDV.
- 5.9 million drivers move up, 4.5 million move down in the 2026 update. Around 32 million contracts stay the same. Source: GDV press release, 9 September 2025.
- Small cars dominate the cheap end: Hyundai i10, Opel Corsa, Fiat 500, Smart Fortwo. A few mid-size diesels (Skoda Karoq) also sit below HP 15.
- EV bonus 2026: BMW iX1 xDrive 30 and VW ID.4 Pure 125 each drop two liability classes.
- Newcomer tip: get an eVB-Nummer before you visit the registration office. Ask your old insurer for a written no-claims statement in German or English.
What "cheap to insure" actually means
If you only remember one number, make it the Typklasse. The German Insurance Association (GDV) recalculates it every year for liability and for partial and fully comprehensive cover. The data behind it comes from anonymous damage statistics over the last three years.
The class does not measure how you personally drive. It measures how your model behaves on the road, as a fleet. A Hyundai i10 benefits from many other quiet drivers in the same model. A high-power sports car pays for its peers' claim history.
Mandatory cover (Haftpflicht)
Theft, glass, wildlife (Teilkasko)
Includes own-fault damage (Vollkasko)

The Typklasse multiplies into your premium. One class down typically saves 4 to 8 per cent on the bill. If you are still building your no-claims class (SF-Klasse), a low-Typklasse car amplifies that effect.

Who moves up? Several electric SUVs and a few high-power diesels. Who drops? Some electric compacts including the BMW iX1 xDrive 30 and the VW ID.4 Pure 125. For a breakdown by category see our guide to the 2026 type-class update.
What else moves your 2026 premium
Typklasse matters, but it is not the whole story. These four factors weigh just as much as the model name:
No-claims class (SF-Klasse)
The longer you drive without a claim, the lower your percentage. New drivers start at SF 0 or SF ½ and pay considerably more than long-term drivers at SF 25.
Regional class
Your registration district has its own class. Bigger cities are usually more expensive than rural districts because of higher claim frequencies.
Annual mileage
Low mileage means a lower premium. Estimate honestly, if you exceed your declared mileage, the insurer can reduce its payout in a claim.
Driver group
Who actually drives the car? Naming individuals is cheaper than "any driver" and protects you legally.

Tips for expats and newcomers
If you just moved to Germany, car insurance is one of the first paperwork items you need to handle before you can register a car at the Zulassungsstelle. Three points to know:
- eVB number first. An electronic insurance confirmation (eVB-Nummer) is mandatory. Your future insurer issues it for free. Without it, the registration office will not register the car.
- Bring your no-claims record. If you already insured a car abroad, you can often transfer part of your no-claims years to a German policy. Ask your previous insurer for a written confirmation in German or English. EU statements are usually easier to convert than non-EU ones.
- Do not register the car under a relative. If you are the main driver but the car is in someone else's name to get a better no-claims class, that is "Schwarzversichern". The GDV is explicit: in a claim, the insurer can refuse to pay, and repeated cases can lead to prosecution for insurance fraud under §263 of the German criminal code. Declare the real driver group truthfully.
